A quantum Leap in VRV Air Conditioning Systems. VRV-ll from Daikin is the world's first to use R410A refrigerant . | 17 Nov 2003 |
VRV or Variable Refrigerant Volume air conditioning systems have seen increasing popularity. Flexibility, energy efficiency, simultaneous heating and cooling capability and relatively low installation costs are among the features and benefits encouraging the specification of this technology. Now an innovative new VRV product is about to be launched onto the European market Daikins VRV-ll.
A quantum leap
Described by Space Air as A quantum leap forward in commercial air conditioning technology VRV-ll, the worlds first R410A operated variable refrigerant flow system represents a considerable advance over earlier VRV systems. Daikins innovative application of new technology and the latest HFC refrigerants offers a wealth of attractions for the specifier and end user.
Loaded with new features
Many new features and installation benefits are incorporated in VRV-ll. Its operating range for example 5hp to 48hp in 2hp increment steps (22 system combinations), is wider than any of its contemporaries. Furthermore, its ability to run no less than 40 indoor fan coil units in heat recovery as well as heat pump format cannot be matched by other comparable systems.
Technically advanced
The use of purpose designed, dc reluctance inverter controlled scroll compressors, throughout the range is an important factor and results in remarkably high Coefficients of Performance (CoPs). The dc motor maintains high efficiency levels in the most frequently used mid to low settings, thereby reducing electricity consumption and costs. Powerful neodymium magnets (7 times more powerful than ferrite types) within the motor increase torque and produce much higher power output to electrical input than can be generated by conventional motors. Optimising the sine wave curve of a motor also results in smoother rotation and enhanced motor efficiency. A significant improvement in heating mode is also realised with the extension of the operation range down to 200 C.
Continuous system operation
Continuous operation is ensured by the provision of double back for compressors and outdoor units in order to maintain minimum emergency capacity. The system also offers high reliability by balancing compressor duty by varying the starting sequence of multiple outdoor unit systems.

Improved outdoor unit fan efficiency
Additional state of the art technology applied to VRV-ll outdoor units includes the industrys first dc fan motor to be used in this manner, resulting in an improvement in fan efficiency of over 45%, particularly at lower speeds. Also, the use of new aerodynamically designed low noise, large airflow fans and discharge grilles reduces turbulence and pressure losses. Lower noise and savings in input power are also achieved by stacking the inverter and printed circuit boards within a new and more compact aero box. Further important technical features include an e-Bridge circuit, which results in additional sub-cooling and an e-Pass heat exchanger. This ensures more effective heat transfer across the heat exchanger and reduces the risk of cold spot thereby considerably improving efficiency.
Installation advantages
Significant installation advantages inherent in VRV-ll include a 50% reduction in footprint (from 3.56m2 to 1.88m2 for a typical 16hp system). Maximum refrigerant piping length is increased to 150m and the standard 6mm H2O external static pressure specification meets the requirements for the ducted indoor installation of outdoor units. Finally, all outdoor units are of equal height and depth and can be transported on site by a normal commercial lift.
Environment friendly
The use of zero ODP R410A refrigerant in the VRV-ll system offers further environmental benefits including the use of a smaller refrigerant charge, lead free PC boards and recyclable galbarium bottom plates.
As compressor technology evolves, R410A is rapidly becoming the refrigerant of choice for many manufacturers, not least because it enables enhanced performance combined with more compact equipment dimensions.
Indoor fan coil units
VRV-ll is supported by a full range of indoor units comprising 2 and 4 way blow ceiling cassettes, ceiling mounted corner, built in ducted, Daikins unique ceiling suspended cassette, wall mounted, floor standing and concealed floor standing models. A new 600x600mm multi-flow ceiling cassette has been introduced to satisfy changing requirements and fit into standard ceiling tile grids. This unit has very low operating noise levels (as have all Daikin indoor units) and a modified airflow discharge angle to reduce down draughts. A new wall mounted model (1.6 to 2.5hp capacity) has also been introduced. Stylish and compact with a substantially reduced weight from 24 to 14kg and an occupied wall space of some 22% less should endear this new unit to the growing residential sector. Intelligent controls
VRV-ll is fully compatible with the current Daikin suite of advanced air conditioning monitoring and control systems including the Intelligent Controller, Intelligent Manager, BACnet Gateway and LONworks.
