Ward TopDek achieves the right result for Matford Land Rover

    20 Feb 2004

Ward TopDek membrane-faced roof panels, and Ward DW100 composite wall panels, have been used as an integral part of a prestigious new Land Rover dealership at Matford Park in Exeter, for the Helston Garages Group.

Ward TopDek is an integrated factory pre-engineered roof panel that facilitates faster on-site roof finish assembly. It comprises a proven high performance single-ply PVC outer membrane integrally bonded with a Firesafe rigid PIR core and a steel trapezoidal profile deck for structural strength. This system features no through fixings and can be curved to radii of greater than 70 metres. A cosmetic standing seam’ option is available from Ward, which can reproduce the appearance of a traditional lead or zinc-clad roof.

The new dealership, Matford Land Rover, is on the Maftord Business Park development in Exeter, which is home to the largest concentration of motor dealerships in Western Europe. The Helston Garages Group operates some of the most prestigious dealerships on the site - including BMW, Ferrari, Lotus, Maserati Porsche as well as Land Rover.

The project architects were Lilly Lewarne Practice of Truro, who were commissioned to design the impressive new 23,000 sq ft. facility, as Matford Land Rover had clearly outgrown their existing premises nearby. The main contractors were Rok-build of Yeovil, and Clegg and Shortman of Plymouth were the sub-contractors for the Topdek roofing and the composite wall panels.

As Robert Moore, Associate at Lilly Lewarne Practice explained: ‘Ward TopDek was the ideal choice for a gently curved roof with an interesting platform. It certainly enabled us to achieve the desired aesthetics, together with the ability to incorporate concealed gutters and to secure excellent air leakage results in compliance with the latest L2 Building Regulations. Overall, TopDek was an integral and complementary part of the whole building design.’

He added: ‘As well as requiring larger contemporary premises, Land Rover needed a much stronger presence at Matford Park. The new high profile building allows the showroom to present a strong visible presence along the adjoining major road. We created an arrowhead planform that has permitted maximum glazing to the main showroom area that, together with the oversailing roof design, has significantly reduced solar heat build up and glare in turn ensuring that the indoor environment remains comfortable even on the brightest of days. The roof shape has also mitigated against shop-front reflections so that the internal vehicle displays are clear and prominent within the showroom to passers-by, both during the day and after dark.’
