Housing 132kVa electricity, the materials used to construct the new electrical sub-station at Sundon required careful planning in order to minimise the risk of combustion in the future.
Given this restriction, Ryebrook Resins was contracted to lay their solvent-free epoxy resin floor coating, Ryetech Plus in the plant room. Laid in an attractive light grey, the floor is easy to clean, has a textured finish to reduce slippages and provides good resistance to impact, loading and abrasion, minimising maintenance over its lifespan.
Located on the first floor of the new sub-station, the main section of the plant room covers approximately 450m². The power-float concrete base was initially prepared using a diamond grinder with vacuum extraction to reduce the level of dust, which was essential as the electrical switch gear was already in place. Ryetech Plus was then laid to a 0.5mm thickness across the floor, with 300 plant seats individually cut around. Being solvent-free the resin floor poses no fire hazard and provides a perfect seal against possible water damage.
Interserve Project Services was recruited to undertake the construction of this sub-station by Siemens of Germany, who in turn were contracted by the National Grid. Having installed resin flooring at other sub-stations, as well as a water treatment plant, Ryebrook Resins had already established a good working relationship with Interserve and successfully won a competitive tender.
