Resin Floor for Design College Canteen

When architects, Allies & Morrison were specifying the floor for the student refectory in the spectacular new Chelsea College of Art & Design campus, they approached Ryebrook Resins, who had the previous year been responsible for laying the high impact resin floor in the entrance area of their own prestigious office building. Opened to the students in December 2004, the College refectory and adjacent walkway feature a Ryebrook FOODSAFE™ seamless resin floor in mid-grey that is hygienic, easy-to-clean and sufficiently hard-wearing enough to deal with constant heavy use.

The new College campus is situated in a listed site on London’s Millbank, next door to Tate Britain. HBG Construction Limited was the main contractor on this £28million development, which has included the renovation of four listed buildings that were once home to the Royal Army Medical College, as well as the addition of a number of new facilities.

Ryebrook first cleaned and keyed the sand and cement screed base with a specialist sanding machine before forming chasers around the perimeter wall to accurately bond the final finish to the sub-floor. Ryeprime epoxy primer was then laid to the 230m² area followed by Ryeflor MD, a self-smoothing polyurethane screed with a matt finish. Laid at a thickness of 6mm, the seamless floor is a practical solution that still offers aesthetic impact. For added protection against scruffs and scratches and to further aid cleaning, the floor was sealed with an acrylic polish.
