Jacksons Defending the Castle |
Newport City Council faced a growing problem of social disorder, violent crime and drug use at Newport Castle, believed to be one of the first built in Wales at around 1327. Due to the intricate maze of paths it had become home to drug users and muggers. Welsh heritage agency, CADW, was also concerned that people were causing irreparable damage to the site.
Increased policing and CCTV failed to solve the problem, so the council turned to Jacksons Fencing to provide a permanent solution. Jacksons installed 72metres of 2metre high Barbican fencing with Saxon finials around the castle, with a 3 metre wide gate, customised fan and quadrant panels, all galvanised and polyester powder coated in a green finish to blend in with the environment.
The measures introduced by Jacksons were so successful that serious and violent crime in the castle has been totally eliminated making it a safe place for people to enjoy without the fear of being confronted by crime.
