Sign 2000 Means Business In Middlesbrough

    2 Mar 2007

Riverside Park in Middlesbrough is one of the area's key business locations with approximately 200 businesses employing over 4,000 people. It has a vital role to play in helping to create the general economic prosperity of Middlesbrough and the wider Tees Valley.

For some time though it was felt that insufficient investment had been made in the area. Indeed, a survey carried out by Middlesbrough Council in 2001 revealed that there were certain key areas where there was room for improvement; access; environment; brownfield sites; security/crime; image and perception of the area.

Determining to meet these criticisms head-on and ensure that this important business location could play its part fully in the economic performance of the area, Middlesbrough Council launched a project to regenerate the area and raise its profile. The intention was to put Riverside Park well and truly on the map.

The project, which has three phases, is funded by ONE North East through the Tees Valley Partnership Single Programme and European Regional Development Fund along with contributions from Middlesbrough Council and Groundwork South Tees.

Groundwork is a federation of Trusts working with their partners in the public, private and voluntary sectors to improve the quality of the local environment, the lives of local people and the success of local businesses in areas in need of investment and support.

The initial phase of the project had identified that new lighting, signage and landscape improvements were required.

For the architectural sign manufacturing and installation, the project required a company that had experience in signage in business parks and that had the flexibility and resources to create a contemporary, durable, low maintenance, bespoke sign scheme.

Sign 2000, of Paddock Wood, Kent, were duly selected by Groundwork South Tees as being able to provide what Riverside Park required and duly liaised with international engineering consultants White Young Green as the landscape architects for the project.

Bearing in mind that signage had been a key requirement of Phase One, Sign 2000 had to ensure that quality was paramount so that the signs reflected the aspirations of the regeneration team to create a positive, dynamic environment that would inspire both those who worked within the business park as well as the wider community.

Accordingly, high quality road and directional sign units were manufactured and installled. These are being augmented by map/locational signs displaying specific areas of the business park and then main directional signs displaying complete maps.

The manufacturing process has utilised high quality brushed stainless steel tubing with profile cut 10mm thick stainless steel and aluminium heads with mask and painted finish to display names.

Vitreous enamel panels are being incorporated into these units to highlight a colour coding area scheme. The map signs are similarily constructed but the map panels will also be produced from vitreous enamel and will be retained in fabricated brushed stainless steel carcasses.

The road name and directional pole signs incorporate excavated and concrete-filled foundations with the signs being fitted using rootcages installed when the bases are excavated or via chemical bolts once the baseses have been cured off.

The stainless steel poles used for the directional signs are not often used for this type of installation but the requirement for a high level of quality meant that the decision was taken to use them. It is also unusual to profile 10mm thick stainless steel and aluminium but the quality imperative dictated that they should be used. Another benefit is that they are more durable against vandalism on the lower signs.

The Riverside Park Phase One regeneration enabled Sign 2000 to create an unusual but highly effective design and implementation solution.
