Kesgrave Library warms to more shelf space with DEVI underfloor heating | 8 May 2007 |
Local residents visiting the soon-to-be-opened Kesgrave Library in Ipswich, Suffolk, will find the experience a warmer one, thanks to advanced underfloor heating installed by DEVI at the new community facility.
When construction company Bovis Homes Ltd built the new library, it contacted DEVI to provide an alternative to a traditional wet radiator system, for a number of reasons.
"Underfloor heating is less obtrusive, safer for heating public areas and means more wall space is available for shelving to house the library's books," explains Mike Kelleher, project surveyor at Bovis Homes.
DEVI installed its intelligent underfloor heating system in a 135m² area, which includes the main library as well as stairwell, lobby, store and toilet areas. Two types of DEVI thermostat are used to control the heating system in the library and the other communal areas; both are easy to operate and can be housed securely so only authorised users can access them.
The DEVI heating system was laid within a screed, minimising disruption during the construction project. "We were looking for a rapid turnaround on the installation of the heating with everything provided by a single agency, which could meet our overall build programme objective, rather than having to commission plumbers and electricians to do the job," adds Kelleher.
DEVI is based near to Kesgrave and provided an energy-efficient underfloor specification to Bovis Homes Ltd and its client, Suffolk County Council.
Bovis Homes and the Council, were particularly interested in sourcing cost effective heating for the new building. Underfloor heating is largely maintenance free and less expensive than a traditional wet system. It warms the feet, body and head directly and only creates gentle air circulation, helping to reduce the quantity of dust particles in the air, an important consideration in a public area like Kesgrave library.
