Forbo's MarmoleumŽ helps create sustainable campus building for Lauder College | 11 May 2007 |
Forbo's MarmoleumŽ helps create sustainable campus building for Lauder College.
When it came to choosing the flooring required for its new state-of-the-art sustainable building at Lauder College in Fife, the project team knew that Forbo's MarmoleumŽ was the way to go.
MarmoleumŽ was installed throughout most of the building, including the main corridor, all staff offices and the ASPIRE centre.
In 2003 Lauder College began a fundraising campaign to support the development of a sustainable building with the aim of introducing staff, students and visitors to working in an environmentally friendly way. This was called the 'EcoSpace Project'.
It will encourage users to adopt best practice in waste reduction, re-use of materials, procurement of renewable resources, energy use minimisation and other environmentally sustainable work practices.
The project team were determined to follow the most ecologically sound route possible, demonstrated by the fact that the new building has a BREEAM Excellent rating for design and an anticipated BREEAM Excellent rating for the construction of the building itself.
Built on a Brownfield site, 75% of the excavation material was retained either on, or adjacent to, the site. Additionally, all suppliers were from within a 50-mile radius of the College.
The building's timber frame is made from Douglas fir, sourced from managed forests.
A sedum roof minimises the environmental impact of the building, provides added insulation and reduces surface water run-off. There is also a rainwater harvesting system.
Turner Townsend managed the project and Muir Construction was responsible for
building work, which commenced in late 2004. The new build is 1900m2 and is linked to the existing College building, which is 1400m2 in size.
Architects RMJM Scotland Limited designed the building.
MarmoleumŽ's inherently natural composition and eco-friendly credentials were a key consideration when specifying the floor.
Janet McCauslin, Assistant Principal, Lauder College said "The environmental impact of all products used within the building was considered. MarmoleumŽ is produced from renewable, natural materials and is fully biodegradable meeting all the criteria. Another key consideration was the environmental impact of the production of the product, and Forbo's state of the art processes made them an ideal choice as suppliers."
She continued "It was important that the floor be hardwearing and durable and MarmoleumŽ fitted the bill on both accounts."
Forbo's MarmoleumŽ with TopshieldTM is the world's leading natural linoleum floorcovering, offering strength of colour and opening up a world of original textures and unique designs.
Derek Byrne, managing director of Forbo says: " We were delighted to work on this innovative, ecologically driven project for Lauder College. Forbo has many years of experience in creating stylish and practical flooring solutions for the learning sector and has an unwavering commitment to best practice and strong environmental credentials, so this project was the perfect combination."
K Systems was responsible for the installation of the flooring.
Over 900 square metres of MarmoleumŽ were installed. MarmoleumŽ Real 2m sheet product in Graphite (3048) was used in a 2.5mm thickness.
Under floor heating has been fitted and F-Ball membrane has been used to allow circulation of air below the MarmoleumŽ.
Janet McCauslin concluded: "We are immensely pleased with the end result. The floor adds to the ambience of the building and helps to define the space really well."
MarmoleumŽ provides a beautiful, natural flooring solution that offers best value and has outstanding performance in terms of durability and hygiene.
