DORMA's star service | 16 May 2007 |
Whether manual or automatic, door operators are often complex in their design and invariably subjected to punishing everyday wear and tear. Regular service and maintenance is essential if they are to perform safely and effectively and there are legal requirements under BS7036 and 1125. Providing an efficient service and maintenance facility on a nationwide basis is tough enough, but the daunting scale of DORMA's network requires a logistical approach on the lines of a military operation.
The DORMA Group is now the largest manufacturer of door equipment in the world, its UK Service Division employing over 200 installation and service engineers maintaining a huge variety of automatic, manual and industrial doors, boldly claiming "any make, any system, anywhere".
The service range options from DORMA are grouped under two headings Reactive and Preventative. A non-contracted servicing and maintenance arrangement (Reactive), means basically that if someone experiences a breakdown or malfunction of their equipment, DORMA will aim to get an engineer to the problem within one working day from receipt of call. If the problem poses serious security or safety issues however, an engineer will call within the same day.
Preventative servicing is a contracted arrangement and is available in three packages. DORMA 3 Star cover provides the minimum recommended level of service for the equipment in question and consists of two visits a year, during which adjustments, minor fault rectification and compliance with BS 7036 will all be made. DORMA 4 Star cover also covers the same activities, but in addition all faults rectified during that call-out are free of labour costs. DORMA 5 Star cover is a comprehensive policy offering complete peace of mind, with no charge for either parts or labour, if replacement is because of wear due to normal use.
It is a legal requirement that all automatic doors are serviced annually to BS 7036 specifications "Safety at Powered Doors for Pedestrian Use" to verify they offer safe and secure operation, long term reliability and working efficiency. In order to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act (DDA), the opening force of manual
doors should also be regularly checked under Approved Document M and BS:8300 and emergency exit hardware, panic bars, latches and bolts require inspection at least once a month under BS EN1125:1997. Industrial doors are covered by the general Workplace Health & Safety legislation and should be professionally maintained in accordance with the manufacturers' specifications.
The DORMA customer base includes national multiples, shopping malls, high street stores, banks, hospitals, councils, offices, industrial estates and educational establishments of all kinds. A Call Centre is on hand during normal working hours to help customers with emergencies and a hotline number is available for any out of hours problems.
