Wolseley and Finnforest provide outdoor smoking solution for Charles Wells pubs | 23 May 2007 |
Construction materials distributor Wolseley UK and Finnforest, the leading UK supplier of wood-based products, have combined to provide outdoor decking structures for the Charles Wells Pub Company.
The new initiative has sprung from the smoking ban which is being progressively rolled out across the UK and which comes into effect in England from 1st July 2007. The ban will drive many patrons to seek alternative space in which to socialise at their local pub, bar or restaurant. Charles Wells Pub Company highlighted this requirement to Wolseley, which then took up the matter with Finnforest, an established major Wolseley supplier. Meetings between the three companies were held, where the need to make structures robust enough for a commercial environment was highlighted. Changes to specification of certain products were then agreed.
Around 150 commercial deck kits are expected to be delivered to pubs in the Charles Wells estate over the next few months, providing safe and comfortable outdoor areas where customers will be able to smoke and which will meet the anticipated Government guidelines.
The kits comprise two design options, a gazebo styled building and a unique deck & pergola system using composite material. This latter product, made from recycled material, is durable and hardwearing, requiring limited maintenance. The deck boards have a grained surface designed specifically to cope with wet conditions, providing a necessary 'non-slip' surface. They are also resistant to moisture and insect damage, which can affect not only the stability of a structure, but also its appearance. The composite deck boards also require no painting, staining or waterproof, which makes them a popular choice for use in public areas.

The pergola design uses durable and hardwearing softwood, sourced from sustainably managed forests. It is designed with weatherboard-clad walls to half the height on three out of four sides, minimising the effects of bad weather, and has a Perspex roof enabling use in all conditions.
Wolseley is also supplying landscaping, fencing, building materials and outdoor lighting for the structures.
David Broadhurst, Charles Wells Project Manager said: "The tide of public opinion appears to be turning against smokers, resulting in the Government's smoking ban, due next Summer. However, the comfort of our customers is of paramount importance, and both customers and staff who smoke will require a safe and covered area, fit for purpose. We approached Wolseley, a key supplier to our organisation and together with Finnforest they have sourced and delivered a competitively priced solution which will make the lives of our smoking patrons that little bit easier".
