Ten Years Old and Still Looking Good | 30 Aug 2007 |
More than ten years after the installation of 18.5 kilometres of pre-formed and pre-finished Pendock pipe boxing at a Northern Counties Housing Association (NCHA) refurbishment project in Sheffield, the casing profiles still look as good as new and receive only an occasional clean with a damp cloth and mild detergent.
The Castle Court Flats complex houses 240 individual apartments over 10 floors and was originally constructed to provide accommodation for competitors during the 1991 World Student Games in Sheffield. Two years after the games, a major refurbishment and refitting project was conducted to rectify damage and to upgrade the facilities for use as permanent dwellings operated and managed by NCHA, one of the UK's largest housing associations.
Significant maintenance cost reductions have been achieved as the strength of the casings and the durability of their finish has meant that they are resistant to damage and do not require the normal re-painting process demanded by site made MDF or ply boxing to keep it looking presentable.
The entire project utilised Pendock MX and TK profiles to conceal pipes and wires in the flats and MX profile boxing to cover the internally visible glazing bars, thermal barriers, door surrounds and skirting in the new walkways. The Pendock casing and pipe boxing profiles used on the Castle Court Flats project are manufactured from pre-formed plywood with a bonded laminate outer surface and were specified with special finish colours to integrate with the refurbishment decoration scheme.
