Sign 2000 The Right Way For Birkbeck College | 30 Oct 2007 |
Part of the University of London, Birkbeck is a world-class research and teaching institution, a vibrant centre of academic excellence, and London's only specialist provider of part-time evening higher education for non-traditional students.
The College was founded by George Birkbeck in 1823, at the Crown & Anchor tavern on the Strand in front of a crowd of around 2000 who had come to hear his plans to launch Londons first ever Mechanics Institution dedicated to the education of working people. Since then, Birkbeck has forged its own path in higher education, reaching out to people traditionally excluded by other universities. Today, Birkbeck is one of the UKs leading centres of excellence in teaching and research, operating from within the newly consolidated £18.5 million campus.
A small but important part of the ongoing refurbishment and consolidation was the updating the Colleges signage and wayfinding systems. It had been some time since this had been done and there was a requirement for a consistent and modern signage system.
Sign 2000 of Paddock Wood in Kent was asked to handle the project as a result of Birkbeck having used them for projects in the past and being satisfied that they could complete the project reliably, within budget and on time.
Sign 2000 recommended the Modular Sign System as being appropriate to Birkbecks requirements simple, stylish and with an uncluttered design.
Modular Sign Systems from Sign 2000 is an elegant, robust and flexible solution for all internal signing requirements. The system is a simple assembly of strong, lightweight, extruded, interchangeable, aluminium profiles. These profiles are securely held in position by integral dovetails.
Each of the profiles can be independently replaced to change its message.
Birkbeck required various wayfinding signs to be installed over their several buildings in London and on several different floors. Indeed, although there was little that was technically difficult for Sign 2000 to undertake, such was the sheer number of permutations and variety of locations that a highly methodical approach was required to ensure that the project went to plan.
Having produced the signs Sign 2000 painted them in Birkbecks corporate colours and then screen printed them with text. They then mounted self-adhesive Braille/tactile elements to aid sight-impaired students or visitors.
The project was split into several different phases and has been rolled out successfully within budget and on time.
