A Tall Order For Sign 2000

    16 Nov 2007

Following a competitive tender, Sign 2000 was chosen to design, supply and install the identity and directional signage for Westway Retail Park, Cumbernauld, Scotland, including the main site signage – a 25 metre high tower.

Westway is a 330,000 square foot, £14 million retail development in Cumbernauld, east of Glasgow. The main contractors for the development, Muir Group, were responsible for appointing Sign 2000 and did so as they believed that the Kent based company had the necessary expertise and capabilities to produce quality results on time and within budgets.

The project required the design and construction of a main identity sign for the development and various customer entrance signs and car park totem signs.

The main identity sign is 25 metres high – the largest sign ever constructed by Sign 2000 and of a size that only a handful of sign manufacturers could have contemplated undertaking.

Having had the designs for the signs approved Sign 2000’s first step was to prepare the groundworks by excavation and setting rootcages within the foundations. The sign itself had a steel structural frame formed in sections with a galvanised finish.

The top open sectional frame was steel clad with aluminium while the lower blank and tenant panels were self-coloured glass reinforced plastic finished with formed and stove painted aluminium panelling to create the desired profile. The top box was constructed as a twin flexible faced aluminium profiled box.

Stainless steel rings were fabricated from sheet brush finished material to a square profile and attached to the main supporting frameworks.

The text – ‘Westway’ and individual tenant names – were created by using face applied vinyls.

The main sign components were delivered to the site and constructed there.

Sign 2000 also constructed customer entrance signs in the same style but as scaled down versions.

In addition car park totem signs were produced from steel angled structural frames with a galvanised steel finish with recessed faces clad with aluminium stove painted as required. Text decoration was face applied vinyls.

The Westway Retail Park with its 25 metre corporate tower is now clearly on the local map.
