Housing Association chooses ”Altherma” heat pump supplied by Space Air

    15 Jan 2008

The Wiltshire Rural Housing Association was established in 1984 to provide rented homes in rural areas throughout Wiltshire for local people in housing need. The WRHA has over 200 properties in 34 villages and is enthusiastically adopting a sustainable approach to its rapidly expanding portfolio of new and refurbished, affordable rental properties.

A development of 10 new build homes: a mixture of 70m2 and 78m2, 2 bedroom houses in Codford, Wiltshire, has recently been completed. All of the homes feature the innovative and highly efficient "Altherma" air to water heat pump system, manufactured by Daikin and supplied by Space Air. The Altherma provides the central heating and domestic hot water requirements.

The Wiltshire Rural Housing Association first made contact with Space Air regarding the ‘Altherma’ air source, air-to-water heat pump, after reading about another successful installation at the Wiltshire Leisure Village in Wootton Bassett - a development of 44 sustainable homes.

Accompanied by John Lippitt Architects, the WRHA visited Space Air’s headquarters, in Guildford Surrey to see a fully operational ‘Altherma’ system and to attend a technical seminar followed by discussions and Q & A’s.

An ‘Altherma’ system was soon installed in a WRHA refurbishment home near Devizes, which originally had direct electric heating and hot water services. Suitably impressed by the performance of Daikin’s ‘Altherma’, the ease in which it was installed and the support provided by Space Air through-out the project, the WRHA decided to incorporate ‘Altherma’ in the new, Codford development.

Gill Shell, Director of WRHA said
“ I was particularly pleased with the ease of installation in the first existing property, where we trialled ‘Altherma’, we are as a result definitely considering retro fitting this system in other existing properties where we feel that heating improvements are necessary. I was very impressed with the level of help and assistance provided by Space Air throughout the installation in the new build Codford project and would have no hesitation in recommending this system to others. Everyone who has seen the system in operation so far is also very impressed with it and I am sure this will become a popular option for both new build and retro fitting.”

The eco-friendly ‘Altherma’ heat pump is connected to the ‘wet’ central heating system in the same way as with a conventional boiler. The Codford installation proved to be very easy to co-ordinate. Space Air supplied all detailed installation instructions complete with full schematic drawings, wiring and plumbing diagrams, and liaised with the Architects, Employers Agent, Contractor and Client through-out the project.

Extra space was saved in the Kitchens by positioning the ‘Altherma’s’ indoor ‘Hydrobox’ or ‘boiler’ unit alongside the water storage cylinder in an airing cupboard. As no flues or special ventilation is required the "Altherma" offers greater installation flexibility than a conventional fossil fuel boiler in addition to substantially better operating efficiency.

It is estimated that with ‘Altherma’ the residents of the new Codford development can save up to 53% on running costs and 55% on CO2 emissions compared to the oil-fired boiler systems, which had originally been considered.
