Eurobricks Energy Saving Systems | 19 Feb 2008 |
When Eurobricks innovative insulated brick cladding system was introduced to the British construction market place in 1991, it was not forseen how 15 years later the importance of the system would become in assisting to combat carbon emissions from buildings and hence aiding in the conquest of global warming. The housing stock in Britain has always suffered from the lack of insulation to the building fabric even though Building Regulations have been improved over the last twenty years or so to improve on a very poor situation. With the ever present global warming phenomena, it is more important than ever to reduce the energy loss through roofs, walls, windows and floors.
Eurobricks patented system allows for an existing building to be insulated from the outside thereby reducing the upheaval, mess and cost that internal wall insulations would entail. By wrapping the building in a blanket of high quality extruded polystyrene, the structure of the building always remains warm and does not suffer from the constant wetting and drying of traditional buildings. With the thin brick skin applied to the polystyrene panels, the building is not only insulated but has the extra bonus in becoming rejuvenated in appearance by the inclusion of new brickwork. For maximum benefit, it is recommended that the windows and doors are replaced with good quality double glazed units and the roof space is provided with at least 200mm thick of roof insulation.
Calculations have shown backed by anecdotal evidence from owners of buildings that the energy savings and costs can be considerable more especially on buildings built pre 1930s where solid wall construction was the norm. With a life expectancy of at least 50 years and the supply and fitting cost of Eurobrick insulated brick cladding system for an average semi detached house similar to that of a medium size family car, the system has to be seriously considered in the fight to reduce energy consumption.
Eurobrick has an extensive range of brick slips based on the Britannia and Classic ranges which can be used externally or internally. The Britannia range are extruded clay slip bricks nominally 215x65x15mm thick enhanced with extruded pistol corner bricks for use at building corners and window/door reveals. The Classic range are mainly cut stock bricks nominally 215x65x22mm thick.
The Eurobrick system is extremely versatile being used externally or for internal use where exposed brickwork is required as a feature to living rooms, kitchens and fireplaces. It is extremely easy to install and can with limited training be installed by semi skilled labour or DIY installers. Training courses are available for the self installer or professional labour who wish to become approved certificated installers of the Eurobrick system.
