Hodgson & Hodgson improves the environment for LSE students

Acoustics specialist Hodgson & Hodgson has given student accommodation at the London School of Economics an acoustic makeover. Passfield Hall, the oldest of the LSE’s student residences, has become the latest recipient of Hodgson & Hodgson’s expertise in noise reduction and sound improvement.

As part of the refurbishment of Passfield Hall, the LSE wanted to improve sound insulation between floors. Hodgson & Hodgson’s Reduc Micro acoustic flooring was chosen to lessen the reverberation through the existing timber floors caused by impact and airborne sound. Consequently, 2800mē of Reduc Micro was laid in corridors and bedrooms throughout the building, overlaying the original floors.

Reduc Micro is a thin acoustic overlay flooring product for use on new and existing timber and concrete floors. It’s designed to damp vibration and attenuate both airborne sound and impact noise passing through floors, with minimal loss to room height. Moisture-resistant MDF and fibreboard are separated by visco-elastic sound-damping strips, whilst a layer of acoustic felt incorporated into the underside gives it mechanical isolation from the existing floor. This felt also allows the product to contour over minor irregularities in the surface of the floor being treated. Reduc Micro can be used throughout a building, including kitchens and bathrooms, and complies fully with Building Regulations.

“Reduc Micro offers excellent impact and airborne sound improvement at a very reasonable cost,” comments Glynne Balshaw-Jones of Hodgson & Hodgson. “Budget is always an important consideration, but especially so for educational establishments. I’m pleased we were able to provide a cost-effective solution for the LSE, without compromising on noise reduction.”

The LSE’s Passfield Hall is a four-storey listed Georgian building in the heart of Bloomsbury. Its recently-completed refurbishment means that students living there now have a unique mix of the traditional and modern in which to eat, sleep, study and socialise.

Hodgson & Hodgson is a market leader in the provision of acoustic flooring systems. The company’s highly qualified and experienced building and acoustic engineers can discuss and advise on all aspects of building design and installation and will prepare specifications to ensure optimum acoustic performance. Hodgson & Hodgson also produces a wide range of acoustic products for walls, ceilings and doors, as well as acoustic curtains and bespoke products for specialist applications.
